Starting again after everything fell apart

There was a season when my life looked nothing like the one I had planned. After more than a decade of giving everything to my work in social work and leadership, I burned out. I went through a divorce. I faced real financial loss.
I am not sharing this for sympathy. I am sharing it because, if you are standing in the rubble of something right now, I want you to know that I have stood there too — and that it is possible to begin again.
You do not have to rebuild everything at once
When everything falls apart, the temptation is to fix it all by Friday. It doesn’t work, and it leaves you more exhausted than before.
What helps is much smaller than that.
Small promises, kept
Confidence is really self-trust, and loss can shake it badly. The way back is to make promises to yourself that are almost embarrassingly small — and keep them.
- A short walk before you look at your phone.
- One proper meal, sitting down.
- Ten minutes each evening writing down what went right.
Each kept promise is a quiet message to yourself: you can be relied upon. Over weeks, that message grows louder than the voice telling you that you have failed.
Let yourself want again
In a hard season, it is natural to want only for the pain to stop. What changed things for me was reconnecting with my purpose: allowing myself to want something for my life, not just away from it.
That is where a vision begins. Not with a five-year plan, but with permission.
If this is your season
Be gentle with your pace. Keep one small promise today. And when you are ready, let yourself imagine what you would love — not what you think you deserve.
